“the bird that pokes its head out” is a photo collage project aiming to link the clues between the traditional Asian virtuous trait of “conforming” (one is better in a group than to stand out) mentality and specific historical events that exploited this trait with propaganda. Through examining the Japanese Internment Camp, the Cultural Revolution, and the “Reeducation Camps” in Xinjiang for Urghurs, the project aims to highlight the harmful aspects of the so-called “virtue.”
